Fast Management?
In organisations, how does one balance between putting people in the line vs putting them in HQ? As business grows, so do the employees. However, while we do need to have sufficient people to manage and run the business, balancing them is the tricky part. And in today's environment where sending email is so convenient, this can result in fast email transmission.
What happens is that instead of reading a mail, digesting them, then transmit only those relevant onwards or at least put a forward as to why the mail is important before transmitting, many will forward with just an FYI or FYA or something equivalent, whether or not it makes sense. Thus mails issued by the executive reach the field staff in extra quick time, their relevance sometimes nebulous. Thus, we should avoid indiscriminate use of distribution list and forwarding of mails.
And here are some gems of management quotes in a contest ran by a magazine. I guess this can happen when one tries to pass on information without first understanding why. Or as someone said, engaging the mouth before putting the brain in gear. I have remove the company names where these quotes came from.
1. As of tomorrow, employees will only be able to access the building using individual security cards. Pictures will be taken next Wednesday and employees will receive their cards in two weeks. (This was the winning quote.)
2. What I need is a list of specific unknown problems we will encounter.
3. E-mail is not to be used to pass on information or data. It should be used only for company business
4. This project is so important, we can't let things that are more important interfere with it.
5. Doing it right is no excuse for not meeting the schedule. No one will believe you solved this problem in one day! We've been working on it for months. Now, go act busy for a few weeks and I'll let you know when it's time to tell them.
6. We recently received a memo from senior management saying: "This is to inform you that a memo will be issued today regarding the subject mentioned above."
7. One day my Boss asked for a status report concerning a project I was working on. I asked him if tomorrow would be soon enough. He said "If I wanted it tomorrow, I would have waited until tomorrow to ask for it!"
